Where Wine, Art & Real Estate Meet: First Friday in Downtown Bend, October 2

For the past three years, Duane and Dina Barker of Lava Terrace Cellars have partnered with Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty to make their Bend-grown wines part of our downtown First Friday experience. This October, that partnership takes an exciting next step: for the first time, guests will be able to purchase Lava Terrace wines right in our office and take a bottle home.

Wine sales in the office begin during First Friday, October 2, and continue Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, as the Bend Fall Festival fills downtown with art, music, food and visitors. Located at 821 NW Wall Street, just a few doors from the Tower Theatre, our office is a fitting place to discover a winery proving that some very good wine can come from an unexpected place.

Bend doesn’t exactly roll out the red carpet for wine grapes. At roughly 3,400 feet, the growing season is short, winters are cold and volcanic terrain comes with the territory. Where others might see obstacles, Duane and Dina Barker saw opportunity—and planted anyway.

They began experimenting with just 50 grapevines in 2012 on their property at the northern edge of Bend. Over time, that experiment grew into roughly four acres planted with cold-hardy varieties including Marquette, Marechal Foch, La Crescent and Brianna.

The results are getting noticed well beyond Central Oregon. Lava Terrace recently entered three wines in the national American Heritage Wine Competition, and all three earned medals: two gold and one silver. Since 2020, the winery has accumulated 16 medals.

“We’ve always believed Central Oregon could produce really good wine,” says Duane. “To have all three wines medal in a national competition shows these grapes aren’t just succeeding here. They can compete with wines from across the country.”

For the Barkers, part of the fun has also been introducing those wines to people close to home. Through their partnership with Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty, guests at our First Friday events have been able to sample Lava Terrace wines while meeting the people behind them.

“One of the best parts of our partnership has been sharing the wines with people right here in Bend,” says Dina. “We’ve loved being part of First Friday, and now being able to offer bottles for purchase makes it even more fun for people to discover something that was actually grown here.”

The October 2 event adds two more Central Oregon connections. Hosting the evening is Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty advisor Heidi Tebbs, who has called Bend home since 2002. With more than two decades in Central Oregon and a background connected to homes, construction and real estate, Heidi brings both professional experience and a long-standing connection to the community she serves.

The evening’s featured artist is Heidi’s brother, Todd Tebbs, a Bend artist whose contemporary abstract paintings are characterized by bold color, texture and layered compositions. Before focusing on fine art, Todd spent years creating decorative finishes, distressed woods and specialty treatments for upscale homes, giving his work an interesting connection to architecture and interior design.

It all makes for a First Friday that feels distinctly Bend: wine grown from high-desert soil, original art, deep community connections and a downtown gathering place where people can experience it together.
