Portland Slang 101: A Transplant's Survival Guide
Relocation Guide
You'll hear all of these in your first week here. Consider this your cheat sheet, so you can nod along instead of quietly Googling under the table.
Places People Say Wrong (On Purpose or Not)
| Couch St. | Pronounced "cooch," not "couch." Locals will let you make this mistake exactly once. |
| Willamette | "Wil LAM ette, dammit." There's an entire local rhyme built around this one. |
| Glisan | "GLI son," not "GLEE san." A street name, a bridge, a rite of passage. |
Terms You'll Need Immediately
| Powell's | The bookstore. Just "Powell's," no clarification needed, ever, by anyone. |
| The Pearl | The Pearl District: condos, galleries, and some of the best dinner spots downtown. |
| Food cart pod | A cluster of food trucks in one lot, often with shared seating. Treat this as a legitimate dinner plan, not a backup option. |
| MAX | The light rail. Not an acronym anyone actually remembers the meaning of. |
| The Round | Shorthand for the Moda Center area, home of the Trail Blazers. "Going to the Round" means going to a game. |
Local Habits Disguised as Vocabulary
| Sunday Parkways | Seasonal events where streets close to cars for walking and biking. Bring the whole family. |
| First Thursday | Monthly gallery walk in the Pearl District, first Thursday of the month. Casual, free, worth doing at least once. |
| "The mountain's out" | Said on clear days when Mt. Hood is visible from the city. Treated as genuinely exciting news, not an overstatement. |
Give it a month. You'll be saying "the Pearl" and "the mountain's out" completely unironically, and you won't even notice when it happened.
