Portland School Districts Compared

School district comes up in nearly every family relocation conversation we have. The Portland metro area is served by more than a dozen districts, each with its own structure, boundaries, and programs. Here is an overview of the districts we get asked about most, along with how to verify details for a specific address. 

District boundaries and school programs vary widely across the Portland metro area

Portland Public Schools

Portland Public Schools is the largest district in the metro area and covers most of the city proper, from North and Northeast Portland through Southwest. It offers a wide range of language immersion programs, along with Focus Option schools that families can apply to outside their neighborhood boundary during a designated window, typically in February or March. Facilities and programs vary noticeably by region within the district, so the specific attendance boundary matters more here than the district name alone.

Beaverton School District

Beaverton is the second largest district in Oregon and covers a broad swath of Washington County west of Portland. It includes several specialized programs, among them the International School of Beaverton, which offers an IB curriculum, and the Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering, a charter option. Facilities skew newer than many Portland-proper schools, reflecting the district's growth over the past few decades.

Lake Oswego School District

Lake Oswego serves roughly 7,000 students and consistently ranks among the state's higher performing districts on standardized test measures. It is a smaller, more contained district than Portland Public or Beaverton, which tends to mean more consistency school to school within its boundary.

West Linn-Wilsonville School District

West Linn-Wilsonville spans two communities south of Portland and is generally regarded as one of the stronger districts in the metro area, particularly at the high school level. Families relocating to this area often weigh it directly against Lake Oswego, since the two districts sit next to each other geographically and draw comparisons frequently.

Tigard-Tualatin School District

Tigard-Tualatin serves the two neighboring communities under a single district with two comprehensive high schools. It sits between the more established Beaverton area and the newer growth corridors further south, and facilities are a mix of older and recently updated buildings depending on the specific school.

David Douglas and Parkrose

David Douglas and Parkrose serve East Portland and are among the most diverse districts in the metro area. Both have made significant investment in career and technical education programs in recent years, giving students vocational pathways alongside traditional academics. Home prices in the areas these districts serve also tend to be more accessible than in Southwest Portland or the west side suburbs, which matters for buyers weighing total cost against school options.

How to Verify for a Specific Address

• District boundaries, and often school assignment within a district, can change block by block. Never assume based on neighborhood name alone.
• Each district publishes its own boundary lookup tool by address on its website, which is the most reliable source since ratings sites are not always current.
• If a Focus Option, immersion program, or charter school matters to your family, confirm the application window and lottery odds directly with the district rather than assuming enrollment is guaranteed.
• Boundaries occasionally get redrawn as districts grow, so it's worth asking whether any changes are under discussion for a school you're counting on.
