Best Dog Parks in Portland, OR

Portland has more than 30 dog off-leash areas scattered across the city, and clients relocating with a dog often ask us where to start. Here are the parks that come up most often, along with what to expect at each one.

Sellwood Riverfront Park

Sellwood Riverfront Park has a 1.5-acre off-leash area along the Willamette River, popular for its space and river access, though the area is not fenced. There are no water fountains or waste bags on site, so plan to bring your own. It's a favorite for buyers looking at Sellwood-Moreland, since it sits an easy walk from the neighborhood's main streets.

Gabriel Park

Gabriel Park in Southwest Portland is one of the city's largest parks, with a fenced 1.5-acre off-leash area split into separate sections for large and small dogs. The park includes water fountains for dogs, shaded areas, and an active regular crowd, which makes it an easy spot to meet neighbors along with exercising a dog.

Mt. Tabor Park

Mt. Tabor Park is nearly 200 acres, with a 4-acre off-leash area in the southern corner of the park. The lawn is not entirely fenced, so it works best for dogs with solid recall. The extinct volcano setting, with its wooded trails and reservoirs, makes this one of the more scenic options in the city for the humans as well as the dogs.

Chimney Park

Chimney Park in the St. Johns neighborhood offers a fully fenced off-leash area, which makes it a reliable choice for owners who prefer a contained space over an open field. It's a good option for buyers looking at North Portland, where fenced parks are less common than in other parts of the city.

Wallace Park

Wallace Park in Northwest Portland has a fenced off-leash area with a rubberized surface and a ramp entrance, along with water fountains and shaded sections nearby. Its location makes it convenient for buyers considering the Northwest District or Nob Hill, where private yards are less common.

Forest Park

Forest Park is not an off-leash area, but it earns a spot on this list anyway. At more than 5,000 acres and over 70 miles of trails, it is one of the largest urban forest reserves in the country, and the Wildwood Trail alone runs 30 miles through it. Dogs must stay leashed at all times to protect the park's wildlife and fragile habitat, and owners are expected to pack out all waste. For a shorter outing, the roughly five-mile round trip from Lower Macleay Park up to Pittock Mansion is a popular choice and connects easily to the Northwest 23rd Avenue shopping district afterward.

Where to Go After the Park

A handful of Northwest Portland spots make it easy to turn a park visit into a full outing with your dog.

• The Hip Hound, 610 NW 23rd Ave. A neighborhood pet boutique carrying food, treats, and gear, an easy stop if you need supplies or a treat after a long walk.
• Breakside Brewery, 1570 NW 22nd Ave. The covered patio welcomes dogs, and staff typically bring out a water bowl without being asked.
• Dragonfly Coffee House, 2387 NW Thurman St. A relaxed neighborhood cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, a good option for coffee and a pastry within a few blocks of the Lower Macleay entrance to Forest Park.

• Most off-leash areas in Portland do not provide water or waste bags, so bring your own regardless of which park you visit.
• Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting a designated off-leash area, even within the park boundary.
